I own a 58' whaler, the 13 footer. I'm very very new to boating, always a DIY'er otherwise. The boat has been sitting in my garage for over a year untouched, and now its time to finally do something about it. I need advice, lots of it.
The boat: had a few dings and cracks on the bottom... was told to sand the crack down and see if water got inside, hollow it out until dry foam is found. Now I can fit a softball in it.
The top: someone attempted some really crappy mods, and drilled holes through the deck for a center console. Long story short, no more console, I want to put it back to OEM.
I started sanding the top and found at least 3 layers of color.
My plan so far based on strictly research:
For holes, grind and repair with fiberglass, apply gelcoat on top
For all that paint and such... some kind of chemical peel away type stuff to get it down to wherever it leads me.
Then continue with awlgrip top and bottom finish process.
Ultimately I'd love to get some good advice from someone that has been there done that. Any takers?

If you choose someone else to do the work for you, please search out references for that particular person. I grew up in Pompano Beach and I know Theres many frauds in that area. Good luck.

Mike makes a good point. I know two people who have headed that route. It is my understanding that the crew at Commercial Products are the ones that handle the refurbishment of the boats not the factory itself.
