I just bought a 2008 150 Sport brand new. It has a 50th Anniversary emblem on the steering wheel. When running and going straight, the emblem is 90-150 degrees to starboard. At rest, with the engine (60 Merc) staight, the emblem is close to being up and down. Also, there is alot of play in the wheel at slow speeds. Does anyone know if the wheel can be adjusted so that the emblem is straight up and down and also take some play out of it? The dealer tells me that it can not be adjusted.
The center of most wheels is removable to access the nut that retains the wheel in place. Usually the center can be reinstalled in a different orientation. Some are held in place with a single set screw through the side of the wheel's hub. Does the wheel itself need to be adjusted as well or is it the type that doesn't matter like a multi-spoke destroyer wheel? A pic of the wheel might be helpful. Even if the center cant be adjusted in relation to the wheel, the wheel should be able to be removed and reinstalled in a different orientation to straighten things out.
As far as any excessive play, well welcome to cable steer systems. Sometimes excessive wear will introduce even more excessive play but your system doesn't seem to be that old. Growing tired of the slop and excessive play is exactly why I replaced my cable steer system with hydraulic. Even with all brand new components, my cable steer system was too sloppy for my liking. Having larger boats all with hydraulic steering, I knew the right choice for me was a hydraulic steering upgrade for my Outrage.
