Tonight I was working on refinishing my teak on a 22' Outrage.

While removing all of the harware from the teak to make for a quality sand job I dropped a screw down the gas tank hole.

The tank is aluminum and I am concerned that the screw may cause corrision in the tank or possibly cause other problems.

Looking for some advice, will this damage the tank?

Thanks

Steve

That screw is the least of your worries down there. Do not fret over it. Worry about all the water likely sitting around the tank in that cavity which can not be drained, old fuel lines and rotting wood in the floor section of the fuel tank cover.

Here is an article I did on all of these areas of concern and how to fix them.

Jeff,

Thanks for the response. I actually recall reading your article last fall. Great job!!

I imagine I will be attempting this redeck project, possibly in the fall or winter. Depending on the honey do list around here.

A mechanic I know told me to get that screw out of there as it may corrode a hole in the tank if it reaches the tank. I have a feeling the screw is still in the fuel line below the deck and has not reached the tank yet as the boat is on a trailer and has not moved. I Tried to remove the hose but it is locked on to the aluminum tank fitting.

Thanks again!!

Steve

How does the fuel fill hose look at the bend (below the gunwale where it makes the turn for the center console)? If your hose is starting to look worn, I highly suggest that you replace.

The benefit is two fold, you may find the screw and you know that your fuel fill line is good for the next few years.

Replacement is not all that difficult and cost about $60 with hose clamps.
