Looking for some feedback on hydraulic steering vs. cable steering. I realize the $$ differance is significant but I really want to cleanup the stern area on the 17' Whaler. Any feedback is appreciated.

Thanks,
Vince

If you only have a 17 footer, buy a new Teleflex mechanical system. It will work great, be less expensive ($150 vs. $500) and will also be cleaner looking in the stern than a BayStar hydraulic system with its cylinder and hoses.

I like the Teleflex NFB (no-feedback system). It's a mechanical system. You might want to check it out.

Installed a BayStar hydraulic system on my 17' Outrage last summer when I re-powered. Worth every penny IMO.

The system has NO slop. I went through replacing all the components of my Teleflex cable steer system twice the last few years trying to get rid of the slop to no avail. Finally a call to Teleflex resulted in them telling me the cable simply must make too many turns in my Outrage and each turn introduces an amount of slop in the system.

I'm with johnnyCW If your are going to keep the boat and money is not a factor go Hydraulic... There is more to it than the Teleflex NFB like two houses. you can see mine on my personal page. I also have a feed back for the auto pilot which you wouldn't have but it will give you a idea of what it looks like. for the clean look as you asked I would go Teleflex NFB Less stuff... but in my opinion the Hydraulic is the way to go. I went Hydraulic was because of the auto pilot. money was not a issue.
Just my two cents on this subject.

Replaced my '89 original cable steering with 18' 4.2 NFB on Montauk as recommended by both BW and Teleflex this spring. Perfect fit, about 2 inches of in spec wheel turn "slop" before clutch engages the cable. Straight forward installation. Very smooth but there definitly is some resistance when turning. This however, is outweighed by the NFB and no prop torque and a steady wheel.

$167 at West Marine with a price match from a net supplier. Baystar would be great but best price I could find was about $500 to the door.

I'm very satisfied. Good luck with your decision.

I think Teleflex NFB would work just fine. To each his own.

I never knew how nice steering could be untill I got my current boat with Hydraulic steering.
