Provisionaly, I just bought a 1970 Montauk that has a less than desirable aftermarket console and no seats; boat is gutted. Any ideas on good aftermarket consoles or know of the availability of an original. What about seats? I thought about having a rear seat made for the wife to have a confy place to sit on rough water days. Also thought about making a platform on the bow area to allow for fishing and for dry-ish storage area underneath. I've looked through the project secction and haven't seen anything about doing this. Any thoughts or links to similar projects are appreciated.

Vince, I don't know if the 1970 model still had the wood console or if it had gone to fiberglass at that point, in fact, I don't think the Montauk model came about until '73; you might have a Nauset, Sakonnet or Eastport. In any event, if you want a wood console, try Nautical Lumber. There are also after market wood consoles regularly on ebay. As for the back bench, I've seen several on this website belonging to other members-- just take a look around. Let me know what you find out about the back bench as I might need to go that direction myself someday. Best of luck, Mike

Vince is correct.
There is no such thing as a 1970 Montauk.

There is also no such thing as a Montauk with an aftermarket console or seat. If the boat doesn't have the original style interior than the boat has been customized and then becomes a "CUSTOM" model.

Many people prefer custom models which has to do with the interior like the seating and the console. We see it all the time but generally in the smaller Whalers from 13' to 16/17' hulls.
Nothing wrong with a Custom Car or a Custom boat interior. It is what it is... Custom.... as it is no longer an original model....

If it helps narrow down the possible age, the original interior color was blue. Is there an appreciable hull design differance between the 1970 boats and the 1973 boats?

Just like we showed you in your other thread question.

Look at the Stencil number to determine the age.

Haven't laid eyes on the boat. Lots of photos and e-mails. As I understand it Whalers of a particular hull design can have several variations with each variation being a different model. Hence your admonition that once a true Montauk has an interior design change it is no longer a "Montauk". Rather, it is a hybrid or a "custom" boat. The exact model is immaterial to me. I'm looking forward to having a sound hull that I can turn into a boat that'll be more suited for my purposes.

Is it possible to mount a gas tank below deck on one of these boats? Just a thought and not a serious consideration.

A 16' hull is all the same. A 16' hull.
Only the interior makes the model.
Otherwise, a bare 16' hull is a bare hull model.

NO.... don't even think about cutting the hull so you can install a tank.
Forget it... or buy another brand of boat...
Tanks usually go under the seat or under the console...

You could send the HIN and Stencil number to Boston Whaler, and they should be able to tell you what model it was originally built as. Then you could make the decision of whether to restore it to that configuration, or customize it. I just used the customer service contact on their website, and got a reply the same day.

As to seating, BW had a mahogany rear seat that they sold as an option on the 16' hulls. There are plans for it on this site, and I believe Specialty Marine or another vendor might build them as well. If you look at the "Downloads" page on this site, it is listed as "Stern seat for Eastport". There are also plans for the center console and pilot seats for various 16' hulls there as well.

There are also plans there for the front casting platform for the Sakonnet which it sounds like you might be interested in.
