1991 Outrage 19 with 1992 Johnson 120. When fuel tank is topped off, fuel gauge reads full. Ran the boat yesterday evening and upon return I noticed the fuel gauge on empty. As the boat pushed through some chop I noticed that it (fuel gauge) was flipping between full and empty. I fueled up to see where I was and she only took 16 gallons (60+ fuel tank).

So what am I looking at here? Pain in the "A", expensive, simple, forget about it and just keep track of hours? Any suggestions and insight greatly appreciated.

I would check the electrical connections at the back of the gauge on the dash and also at the sender. Open the inspection port to get to the sender.

Thanks for the tip Phil. I did pop the cover just behind the CC and I believe I was looking at the gauge wire (directly on top of the tank). Connection looked good but I will definitely take a better look next time I am on board.

In my experience if the connection is good, it is probably the sender. The fuel gauge has either worked or not worked for me in the past. If it works at all, it is probably the sender if not the connection. Good luck!

I have seen connections that look good from the outside but are corroded on the inside. For this reason, I replaced all my ground and fuel gauge wires during my overhaul project last month.
