I'm about ready to paint my 72 13 sport project. I completely sanded down the hull. Question is, should I put primer the bottom if I am going to put bottom paint on it? Thanks.
A lot of people say you need primer. I took my last whaler sanded as you did and put on a nice coat os bottom paint, no primer and it was perfect. It was a 18 Outrage and the paint lasted several years. Good luck!
Do yourself a favor and learn how to do the job properly before you start. Paint company websites are a great place to get information, for example: http://www.pettitpaint.com/fileshare/tech_bulletins/geocoatblisterrepair.pdf or http://www.yachtpaint.com/Images/15_20468.pdf
Yes, you do need a primer, in fact a special primer typically called a barrier coat. If you just sand the hull and put bottom paint on, you're likely to get terrible blistering, as neither the sanded gelcoat nor the bottom paint is waterproof.
I always done a barrier coat on bare hulls, just seems like teh smart thing to do. I like Ablative-SP paint as it wears down. Pettit makes a water based bottom paint-hydrasomthing. Works well, its multi seasson and cleans up easy which I like cuase I paint the bottom in my driveway.
Corey, I thinks you are referring to Hydrocoat. And it works fine. Primer isn't a bad idea, especially barrier coat type. And as mentioned above, the manufacturers website are a wealth of info.
