I have 13 foot whaler. I live on the Mobile Bay and have my boat on a lift. Due to the oil spill on its way, I would like to move my boat to Fish River nearby and leave it in the water for a while. The water there is brackish. Will this hurt the boat if I leave it in for the summer??

How long will you leave it in the water? If you do keep it in the water and decide not to paint the bottom, I'd be in the water scrubbing that bottom down every week or so. I've kept my boat in salt water almost a week with no issues.

I was hoping to leave it in this particular slip for a couple of months

"Brackish" water can promote/support a crop of barnacles in as little as two months especially during the summer. The oil may be easier to deal with.

I would put some bottom paint on it.

you have to be very carefull with all kinds of water
live it to long the water can effect the gelcoat
you can put some antifouling if you want to

Correct me if I'm wrong, but gelcoat is a barrier to keep water out of the glass. I've seen boats left in the water for months and the worst that has happened is extensive marine growth, nothing more. A trailer would be you best option if bottom painting is out of the question.

Osmotic Blistering is a condition found in most fiberglass boats. Blistering occurs when water penetrates through the gel coat and mixes with water soluble materials found in the fiberglass layers beneath it. The seawater then becomes a solution that will try to equalize with the seawater outside the boat. As the solution has now grown molecularly, it cannot back out of the passage it entered, it builds up pressure as it tries to escape and then it explodes, resulting in blister domes which appear on the outside of the hull.
