all- long time lurker on here who finally has a question where I am seeking valued opinions of the assembled experts!

I have a 1986 18 outrage with a 150 yamaha 4 stroke. I have recently noticed the boat sits way low in the water line- to the point where, at rest with a low fuel load and only 1 person, the water level in the starboard side bilge/through hull is only an inch or two below the floor (i.e. my steering, battery, etc cables are all in the water, pretty much constantly). Also, the stern area where the 3 through hull drains are constantly has water in it as the level of the drains are now almost even with the water lines.

A little research indicates to me that there is a negligible difference (75lbs) between the 4 stroke and the original yamaha 150 2 stroke. 75 pounds CAN NOT be what is causing the boat to sit so much lower in the water.... can it?

anyways, any info welcome. this boat is my baby, has treated me so well over the years, she is getting older and I want to make sure she is around for a long long time. thanks in advance.

What changes other then the outboard were made? Do you have photo's, you should create a personal page.

and yes 75# can make a difference between above the water line and just at the water line.

My 1985 Evinrude 150 weighs 386 pounds.

How much did your old Yamaha weigh?

The Yamaha 150 4 stroke weighs a little more than 470 pounds.
From this list you have to add on the extra pounds for the X-Long shaft.

Here is a another 18 with a Yamaha 150 four stroke. You could use it to gauge how yours sits though this one does have a kicker.

thanks guys, very helpful

I will try to post pics once I get out this weekend. to answer, we also have a custom seat in the stern that weighs about 70 lbs. obviously does not help.

The photos of the 18 with the kicker do look like a similar draft. Is that your boat? if so, do you deal with water in the cockpit when standing in the starboard stern?

Are you saying that you are getting water over the rear bulkhead, onto the fuel tank cover?

Sounds about right. When I had a 115 on my 86 Outrage 18, the sump was basically dry and the outer drains on the transom were well above the water line. When I switched to a 2 stroke 150, I noticed the weight difference. Now the sump is about half full and the outer transom drains are about at the water line. It would be a bit more pronounced if I had purchased the 4 stroke.

Considering the weight, does not sound abnormal to me. My 18 sits about the same, and it has 610# of engines, plus both batteries in the stern corners.

I would DEFINITELY keep the sump plug in at all times. You should be keeping all water out of the rigging tunnel, where it can easily overflow into the gas tank cavity. If boat is kept in the water, use a bilge pump instead of leaving the plug open. On mine, I have also plugged the three transom drains, and installed a bilge pump there also. Keeps it totally dry, and the little 500GPH pump easily gets rid of any splash.
