I have been after a Montauk for some time and have been offered (by 1 owner) a choice of 2 boats for around the same price. Both are 1988. There are 2 engines - a 90Hp 2 stroke Yamaha and a 100hp V4 yamaha. The 2 hulls are a 15' super sport and a 17' Montauk. Both are centre console.
We would use the boat in the Mediterranean, close to shore (max. 3 miles) for short trips for skiing, having fun with the 2 kids and going from a to b (absolute maximum 15 miles).
What boat would be best?

As long as you aren't running in a shallow river, this is a no brainer.

Take the Montauk....

13' models have a 6 inch draft
15' models have a 8 inch draft
17' models have a 9 inch draft

I used to run shallow rivers in a Sport 13'.... There is no way I could have used a larger Whaler with more draft. I would have torn up the bottom of a larger boat.

Thanks
No shallow river work, only to be used in the mediterranean sea with hardly any tide.
Why would you advise the montauk?

It's almost 2' longer and it is also has a wider beam.
You can stand up in a Montauk safely and drive.
Lots of other reasons and maybe others will add to this their reasons.

The 15' models are max rated for 70hp so if the one you are looking at has a 90hp on it, it is over powered...

The 17' models have a max rating of 100hp....

Look at the different Models here:

Good Luck with your final decision.

I've joked on Whaler Central about trying to stretch my 15' Sport into a 17' Montauk. Take Joe's advise. The 17' would give you more room and you'd have more horsepower if you needed it on the open water of the Mediterranean.

I used to own a 15' Super Sport for 15 years. I loved it when I was young but given a choice its a no brainer, the Montauk. Trust me, the length, beam, ability to stand are far superior.

No brainer, I'd take the 17' in a heartbeat.

3 miles off shore is too much for the sport 15', it is UNDER 16' long and NOT "Sea Worthy", anything under 16' long is classified as a "Tender".

It really doesn't matter what water you are running in, a Montauk is hands down a much more versatile boat. I have had both. A 15 isn't any better than a 13 when it comes to comfort, etc. I now have a 21, and I can go anywhere a 15 can, but the reverse is not true. In addition, there is a big demand for used Montauks, and you will have trouble selling the 15. It was easier selling my 13.
