1968 16ft Nauset "Birdsall Marine" Leaning Post Installation
I am installing a Birdsall Marine Mini Leaning post onto my 1968 16ft Nauset. The mounting points are 32" wide which are in line with the boats wood stencil. I am going to mount it using toggle bolts for extra security. Sealing the holes with 5200, and west system's G-flex thickened epoxy.
I am curious how much of a void in the foam is needed. There was a thread which I can't find of the angles used by a boat owner to void the foam below the ply. Going to use a hand drill with a bent nail attached.
If anyone has accomplished this feet, any advice would help.
I mounted a leaning post on a 1988 outrage years ago and had to avoid the fuel tank under the deck. I used either #12 or #14 (short 3/4"or 1") stainless self tapping screws and 5200. I never had a problem during the years I owned it.
If you are mounting the leaning post and the fastners will be in the plywood backing in the floor, there is no need for toggles. I suppose if you want additional fastners you could drill the feet for more fastners.
Unless you are fabricating something that goes in the boat, there is never a reason to use 5200, or 4200. Ever.
To seal a screw all that is needed is a good marine sealant, not an adhesive.
The stories of owners frustrated in trying to remove something that was installed with 4200/5200 are plentiful, along with their inappropriate language about the effort.
Brands of sealant include Boat Life, 3M, Starbrite and OSI.

Awesome. Thanks for the advice. Birdsall makes a nice product. Plenty of fastening points. My main concern was the pull thats going to be on it. 4 rods ranging from 25 to 6 oz drag each. Without a fish. But in turn, there are 16 fastening points all inline with the stencil. Thanks again.
Just wanted to check in on this thread and see if you had any update about how the Birdsall 32" Mini was working out for the boat? I'm considering putting one in my 1967 16 Nauset but curious on how well it fit and how comfortable it was. The seating area looks a little slim.
