Hello, I am in the process of restoring the console of of 1997 Montauk 17. I am looking for the OEM rubber well nuts for the windshield and the one from Amazon #10-32 807 are not the ones. The rubber well nuts that came with the console do not have the long stud but are more compact and have a nut. Thanks

For Whalers that have the "Inland Rules" navigation lights, as most of the boats 13'-17' and 1970's era Outrages, 19' and 21', you can also use Cole Hersee switch #M-476-BP This has three terminals, and the first detent works the stern light only (as an anchor light), and all the way out works both bow and stern, for complete running lights. You can find them on Ebay from between $20-$25. For Inland Rules, this is a smaller head and less expensive switch for navigation lights.

I can offer definitive information on where to obtain a factory replacement for the Direct Reading fuel gauges on the 70's and 80's Outrage and Revenge models. The sender and gauge is made by Rochester, as noted here, and since it is no longer generally available, E-Components International has arranged with Rochester to have the Whaler fuel gauges made exclusively for them. These are a perfect fit and the float arm length does not have to be adapted or altered in any way. E-Components is now offering them through one of their websites,
https://liquidlevels.net/collections/...ton-whaler
If you call (recommended), talk to Brian. He knows the BW boats and can sell you the correct replacement sender/gauge for your model Whaler and for the size tank you boat has. I just ordered the correct one for my 1989 Outrage 25 with single 140 gallon tank, part #6580-203. They still use the same part number that is stamped on the side of your original gauge.
Check out the "liquidlevels" home page and you will see some photos you recognize.
These fuel gauges are an identical replacement for what was factory installed, except they no longer have the spring loaded separate dial. See photo on the website.

She says the gray pads are still available from Whaler (a certain eBay seller claims they are not and that they are the only ones with 'old stock' ).
Twin Cities Marine has these custom produced with BWs permission and has to order 25 pieces minimum at a time. They currently have them in stock.

Also found the cooler hooks at a local Hamilton Marine Store here in Maine, may be available at other marine locations, still in the $8-10.00 range. If you have the original cooler cleat mounts, even one, or a broken one at that, you can trace it and fabricate as many as you want. The length of the bungee is fairly easy to figure out thru trial and error, it is also sold by the foot at many marine store locations. Don't drill to large a diameter hole for the bungee to pass through or your cleat will have a weak spot. Counter sink the holes on the underside to allow for the knot in the bungee. Sorry didn't keep any dimensions when I tackled this project.

There are two options for the rod holder problem.
First of all, I have located a replacement WHITE cap for the Whaler furnished rod holders. It is Whitecap part #S-1957LP. This is the only source I have found, and just purchased two of them.
http://www.jamestowndistributors.com/...?pid=14609
Another option if you don't just need a replacement cap is to use the Lee 0 degree recessed rod holders. They drop into the existing holes, and look very nice. Other manufacturers also make a similar product.

You can get them on Amazon, package of 25, for about $22 with shipping. This seems to be the best deal on-line.
Grainger has a package of 10 for $9, but you would have to go into one of their stores, since shipping is $10., making the package of 10 not a good deal relative to Amazon.

They can also be ordered from AGM container ($250 minimum order); however, the AGM part number has changed to CT05608.
TH-Marine also makes a near identical replacement. The TH-Marine part number is: BS-1-42SS. Who is the BW supplier. I'd rather deal with them directly as I'm not to fond of my local BW dealer as they flipped my 13ft after they installed a new throttle cable.
By the way I purchased a WJ Mills mooring cover for my boat with the original gunnel clips and it fits perfect, is more durable than the original canvas, and was very very reasonable. So far (5yrs) it has out performed two custom Sunbrella covers. I'm going to have them make me a matching spare tire cover for the trailer.

I don't use the seat back rod holders on my 1984 Montauk 17' since we always have the bimini top up here in the Tampa Bay area. I saved them of course, but made a couple of teak wood caps to put in the holes, shaped them, fine-sanded them and varnished them, as all of my teak is. They look like nearly flat mushrooms are are very attractive (beautiful wood) and make it more comfortable to rest my arm on the seat back. Yeah, I know...they aren't original, but I can lift them out and put in the originals in at any time.

Joe: You indicate that these are the correct configuration. the port side emblem has the word "Boston" be in front of the harpoon. I was under the impression that the harpoon was in front of the word "Boston" on both sides. Matter of fact. I see pictures on Magic Brush site both ways for the port side decal. What's up?

There were 2 other types of lights used once and awhile on some Whalers.
At this time, we have no idea why Whaler used these 2 other types of lights and there is no evidence of them in any parts catalogs or part numbers that we know of. Cost or lack of availability of the standard lights in the photo above?

I replaced the receptacle with a Chinese part sourced on Ebay. Although not brass it fit exactly in the old fixture. Re use the plastic that insulates the receptacle from the bronze casting. I also used an LED that replaces the orignal bulb.
The lamp and receptacle are common to vintage Lionel and American flyer model electric trains.

I just went to the boat show and the same Igloo 94 quart cooler is on the newest 170 Montauk. However, they use a different system than chocks on the deck to secure it. The bungie cords hook to a piece of starboard on the center console and the base of the cooler sits on the deck now. It's a flimsier way to secure the cooler now.

I needed to replace these on my 1981 Outrage 24. Although the brass would be better, the dimensions are not the same, and I didn't want to get into modifying my teak doors & frames to accept the brass ones. I found very similar plastic ones at Hamilton marine. Although I haven't yet received them to be sure they are an exact fit, Hamilton measured them for me and they appear to have the exact same dimensions.

Several posts mention that the Sierra connector is for larger whalers with the larger stern lights. That is correct as it will not fit through the base on the smaller whalers. However there is a simple fix - take a pair of sharp scissors and trim the flange off of the male connector half that goes on the light.

Here are the part numbers for the Grab Rails.
Outrage 18' = part #15-0872-00
All larger models seem to be = part #15-0576-00
NOTE: These are not to be confused with the larger "Side Rails" which are completely different.

I just purchased a 1971, believed to be a Nauset, it had no bushing in it, I took a 1/2 "PVC compression coupling I had laying around and took one of the rubber gaskets out of one end and cut it in half. It works great and if you loose it you have the other half.

If you can get a bitt in your hands for awhile, you could send it to the Port Townsend Foundry (WA) and they can cast you a new one in bronze. Probably cost less than an original and it will last forever. If you don't want the look of the bronze, you could take it somewhere for chrome or nickle plating.

Check eBay regularly. I was able to score one from an estate sale about a month ago. Paid through the nose... it had never been out of the box... The model is #9701 and is called a SportSpot Deck-Hand. The top part detaches from the base when you loosen the knob so you can lift it up and away from the base to point in any direction.

If your windshield is just dull and cloudy there are several products on the market that you can use to polish it back to "like new" shine. Just go to your local auto parts place or Napa and ask them for a recommendation. I've used it on aircraft windscreens and headlight covers. Easy AND cheap. What could be better?

Part numbers for Brass Tubing:
1 inch O.D. x .032 wall thickness x 3 feet long = #8950K792
1 1/4 inch O.D. x .032 wall thickness x 3 feet long = #8950K832

Part numbers for O-rings:
O-ring for 1 inch tubes = #9557K482 (size=dash 213) ($4.59 pack of 50)
O-ring for 1 1/4 inch tubes = #9557K486 (size=dash 217) ($4.97 pack of 50)

Ok amateur hour here. How the heck do you get the black plastic piece (pictured) that holds the bulb and bulb holder in place out from the outer chromed/stainless piece? All I want to do is relace the bulb and there doesn't seem to be an easy way to do this. It feels as if the port/starboard lens and black piece are glued in rather than just friction fitted. Any thoughts. I really thought it only took one person to change a light bulb but I am proving myself wrong. Mine bow light is from a 1981 Montauk.

The rod holders pictured are original equipment from my 1989 Outrage 25, manfactured from 3/4" marine Phillipine mahogany plywood. Because they were only coated with a couple of coats of spray applied polyurethane varnish, did not hold up very well and quickly showed signs of minor delamination. In 1991, BW stopped using the plywood, and changed over to black starboard, which I bought and installed in the boat. 19 years later they still look great.
I recently found these plywood units sitting around, and completely refurbished them using polyurethane glue. I then stained with Zar #120 teak stain, and applied 10 coats of Z-Spar Flagship varnish. When finished, they looked better then new, as pictured. I sold them to someone here. They looked so good, I seriously considered re-installing them in the boat, but didn't want to deal with a different set of mounting holes in the boat again.
I made a tracing of them before selling, but I don't know if Mike at Nautical Lumber has a pattern of his own. My 1986 Outrage 18 had the two hole version, but I converted those to the 3 hook starboard ones also. They had to be shortened in height to fit.
Here is a photo of the factory original black Starboard versions of this rod rack, 1991-1993 model 22'-25' boats. At this time BW was determined to eliminate all wood in their boats, the Reebock owners being convinced people did not want varnished wood in the boats any longer.

Adjustment Instructions.
My 1979 Outrage has this exact fuel guage.
When I fill the tank it goes to 1/2. It moves back and forth - but after an hour of running or so it drops to 1/4 tank or lower.
I just never know how much fuel I have.
Is there an adjustment to these. The four screws move up and down - but I don' get any clear changes.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Dave

On my 1982 18' Outrage the fuel gauge seems to be magnetic. You might try sweeping over the gauge with a magnet and see if you can't get the needle and the magnet from the float back in alignment.

You can purchase sand spikes at tackle shops along the east coast in several diameters that are flared and could be cut to the right length and drilled for the mounting screws. usually inexpensive. Frisco Rod and Gun and Red Drum Tackle both have web sites and will ship.

This bulb can be found in the Perko Catalog pg. 72. The part number is 0071DP0CLR. The 0 after "DP" stands for 10 Watts. A similar one is part # 0071DP8CLR which is an 8 Watt version which draws .70 Amps. I'd stick with the 10 Amp version though.

I looked long and hard for one of these babies but could not find one so I ended up just installing a pedestal to the bow locker coverof my SS15. After doing so of coarse one popped up on ebay. I think it went fo 350+. Not worth it to me. I am happy with my route especially since I did not have to drill through the hull(murder). What I also did was added a 3/4" piece of mahaugany undernieth for support and added 2 more hinges to support the added weight when opening the bow locker. If anyone needs advice or would like to know some secrets of my modification I'd be happy to share. You should be able to see what I did in my pictures and if you still want what is above then I suggest looking for one of the old stripers because that is what it was used on.

I just got so incredibly lucky yesterday. I bought the entire bow light assembly for $175.00, brand new from a Port Harbor Marine in Maine:D Here is the story. I dropped by a couple weeks ago and they said they had sold the bow light from the rest of the assembly for some reason. The parts guy told me that they don't like having those kind of parts lying around in their inventory, so he gave me a wicked pissa deal ($75 for the Chock PLate, Spacer, and Bollards)!! He then ordered me the Bow Light which was $99.00. So drop by your local Boston Whaler dealers everyone, you never know what kind of luck you'll run into;)

I just replaced these on my 22 revenge. The cabinet required a 1/2" and the hatch door was 3/4". Found them at Ace Hardware and they appear to be indentical to the originals. All I had to do was use locking arm from the old locks since the ones in the package were to long.

I contected LEE Tackle and they said they never made the out rigger base for the Montauk and didn't know where we could find any. They also said that about four times a year they get calls for the mount. Does anyone know where they can be purchased? The part number is for the out rigger POLES, not the mount.

I just completely re-striped my temptation 2500. The 2 "Whaler" logo letters on the rear side panels and the 2 "temptation 2500" cursive lettering are available from Magic Brush. They are a sponsor of this website (upper right hand corner-just click on) For the balance of the striping, you will have to make a template and take it to a sign company. They can cut you the correct striping from the template you provide. I took a roll of thermal fax paper, rolled it out over my existing decals, taped it in place, and traced the outline of the decal to make the template. Janis at Magic Brush can provide your sign company the correct 3-M decal colors. Mine came out great. good luck

FWIW Perko still makes a replacement lens that will fit the original light assembly. It is LENS Cat. No. 0296DPOLNS. ($9.50 in Hawaii) The only difference is the replacement has no holes for the two small screws that hold on the light assembly. I suggest not drilling but using a piece of 3/16 brass tubing and heating it and melting the holes in the correct place. The plastic is rather brittle and I cracked all the ones I tried to drill on the green side. You could probably heat a drill bit if you can't get the tubing.

Joe,
The key chain is a great idea. I would like to contribute. I don't have a paypal account. What is the address for snail mail?
Thanks, Mike

These keychains are available to anyone who contributes to WhalerCentral via the "Contributions" panel on the left sidebar.
Click on the PayPal Donate logo, you can choose to use your regular credit card if you don't have a PayPal account.
You can also send a contribution to us via snail mail if you prefer, however the PayPal site is very secure.

Too many sites don't give you anything in return for your contribution other than self satisfaction knowing that you contributed.
We however would like to go a littler further than that by showing our gratitude to our contributers. Something you can use every time you take your Whaler out. This keychain is just a small token of our appreciation to the contributors of this site and something you can take with you and remember for years to come.

Thanks to all of you who have contributed to WhalerCentral.
We hope you like these new keychains.

IMPORTANT UPDATE: 10-27-2011
Due to circumstances at this time we are all out of keychains and may not be able to obtain anymore at the price and quantities that we used to get. So, we are looking for other alternatives.
Until we find something equivalent we no longer have any keychains in return for your contribution.
We will keep everyone informed if something changes.

Chef, it depends on who installed the cleats and how tight they made them on the original 86 qt cooler. The size of the 94 qt is almost identical at the bottom but could be vary slightly. The 94 qt is the replacement cooler. In the past, I have taken the lid off of an 86 qt and put it on a 94 qt cooler. It fit perfect right down to even the hinge screw holes.

Factory Leaning Post from 1989 Outrage 22' Cuddy.
In my opinion the 1989 Leaning Post has the nicest features of all the prior Classic Leaning Post. It has the grab rail behind the 4 Perko Rod Holders or Rocket Launchers and the retaining rail for the cooler that lifts up so you can remove the cooler easily.
The cushion has a sticker on the bottom that states, made by Garelick for Boston Whaler. The piping is Dark Brown and the material is 1" heat seal which is parchment in color.

Navigation Light Switch for Whalers with the International light system like Outrages, Revenges.

Made by Cole Hersee. There is a number 37 on the switch however the part number is M-532.
Cole Hersee M-532 switch
There are 4 terminals and has two positions.
The first terminal 'B' on the middle left is Battery.

In the first position: both Masthead anchor lights come on and the bottom terminal (R) and the upper right terminal (P) are ON.

In the second position: all the navigation lights are on with the exception of the rear facing masthead light. The bottom terminal (R) stays ON, the upper left terminal (H) turns ON, and the upper right terminal (P) turns OFF. The upper right terminal is attached to the rear facing masthead light bulb.

For more info, read this article here: How to wire Navigation Lights

This switch also works on Montauks and other models without the International Lighting System.
The upper right terminal (P) would not be used.
Hook the Anchor Light to the bottom terminal (R) and the Naviagation Lights to the upper left terminal (H).

Apparently, they are no longer available. Instead, the closest bulb to match the #1152 in size and Candle Power are the #T1004
All the rest of the bulbs had much too much Candle Power.
Anyone come up with anything different or better?
Apparently, another replacement that will work is a #1076 but has the Wattage of 23 which is higher than the original 17.1 Watts of the #1152.

This windshield is for the Standard Consoles on Classic Montauks and Outrages and maybe a few other models.
There were several companies that made the OEM windshields for Whaler. Here are two;
1. Taylor
2. Egan-DeYoung
The above windshield was made by Peter Egan last year. It has a little darker tint to it than the originals had. It looks darker in the photo than it really is.

This seatback had a couple coats of dark stain on it and the grain was raised badly. I started sanding with 80 grit and went down to 100 and then 150 grit. I used a palm sander and also a wood block wrapped with sandpaper. I also wrapped sandpaper around a putty knife to get between the slats. There are other ways to get between but I didn't have the power tools like a fein sander.

The "Head, Bow & Ski Eye" (D-ring) on the left is Whaler part#12255000

The "Nut, Eye" on the right side is Whaler part #12017800

The threaded rod in the center varies in length from model to model and bow or stern. This threaded rod is a separate piece for many models. Some earlier models had the threaded rod as part of the Head Eye or D-ring. I don't think the older versions are available but these newer versions still are. The threaded rod is nothing more than a Stainless Steel 3/8" or 1/2" NC.

The above part numbers are good for most Classic models as stated in their respective parts manuals for certain years. Later years used a different style and some models may vary.

Boston Whaler hull decals. They come in different sizes for the various size hulls so make sure you know what size you need.
1. Small = 14 inches long
2. Medium = 18 inches long
3. Large = 28 inches long

These can still be purchased from your Whaler dealer.

One thing to pay particular attention to is where the "BOSTON" is placed on these decals.
As you can see, they are NOT the same position on both sides of the boat. Way too many people that are trying to sell these decals don't have a clue as to what the originals look like so they place the "BOSTON" in the same place on each side. This again is NOT correct. Also pay attention to the ® symbol. For an original style decal, you must have the ® in front of the sled. The decals above ARE correct for the Classic series of Whalers.

See this FAQ in decal size and location for various Classic models:

Original Plastic Cabinet Latches were used on earlier Montauks (maybe other models also). These were pulled from two different Montauks. One a 1977 and the other a 1978. They had a tendency to break and they could also get very stiff making it difficult to open the console doors.

Original color Khaki Deck Plates made by Beckson. Beckson made a special run of these Deck Plates in the Khaki color last year especially for Whalers. 3 different plates shown here are the 6" clear, 6" dimple, and the 8" dimple. For an Outrage 18, it takes Two 8" dimple, Two 6" dimple, and One 6" clear for the fuel gauge.
These Deck Plates are the Pry Out style.

The Marinium Bow Bitt for the Classic Whalers was made by Wilcox Crittenden and was made in several different sizes, Outrage 18 to Outrage 25. I am not exactly sure how many different sizes were made but the 18' will not fit any of the larger models. The Outrage 18' Bow Bitt is stamped "18" on the underside. I am not sure about the other models but I assume they would be stamped also. However, the Outrage 20' and 22' would each use the same size Bow Bitt but different from the 18'. Some models of Revenge also used this style of Bow Bitt.
These Bow Bitts are NO longer available.
