This is an original Sakonnet with the front platform and Reversible Pilot Seat. It is hard to see in this photo but the front platform is painted white which was original.
I grew up with this boat in Cape May, NJ. We had a '69 hull with a '72 Evinrude engine that wouldn't die, even if you drove a stake into it's heart!. My father owned this boat for over 20 years and it still ran like a champ into the mid '90's when he sold it. Unlike other commoners, we would painstakingly sand and varnish the center console and seat so that it would look as original as possible. Lot's of great memories with that baby!
I have one of these boats (1963 Sakonnet).
Missing however is the Pilot Seat.
Note for those who may look at the drawing for the pilot console. The drawing on file here is a console model that the solid mohogony is from the table top down to about knee high. Then the lower part of the console is three sides plywood attached to mahogony with screws.
This era console on Sakonnet (with forward fishing deck, made of teak and painted white) mahogony woodwork was one piece, from table top right down to deck.
Anyone building new could use the published plans and just extend the lines, omitting the lower plywood panels.
Does anyone know if the two styles of making the console was an early verus later model design change, or was it always so, just depending upon the model/trim of the 16' 6" boats?

Does anyone know if the 1970 Sakonnet had a platform? I bought a 1970 Whaler and am still trying to get the exact model. Does the stenciled number identify the model? My boat is missing the captains bench and it appeared to have a front seat, which I will not replace. Also, any information on who can make a quality captain's bench and back bench. I am a new member and am counting on you guys for some good info. Thanks! Pete H
