I have acquired a 1999 Boston Whaler Outrage with a 225 Offshore Mercury outboard engine. Its been sitting around for about a year and has been started twice. I took it out the other day and it ran fine, but i need to know (since i have owned mainly sea rays and have never delt with a boat that has been sitting for so long) what kind of maintenance i need to do (i.e oil, power steering, bilge pump). What are the general issues with whalers. if anyone can give me a good website or something that has to do with 23 outrage maintenance. I noticed that the steering was kind of rough, is that typical? Also, what is the difference between a bilge pump and a sump pump. I know these are a lot of questions but i am curious since i cant find anything on 99' 23 outrages on the internet! Thanks!

Whalers don't need much maintenance.

If your motor needs maintenance, then the best place to go in your case is a Mercury dealer.

The Steering is most likely made by Teleflex.
There is the Helm unit, steering cable which is then attached to the engine.
You could also have hydraulic steering which would have hoses instead of the cable.
Which one do you have?

Bilge pump is basically the same as a sump pump.

I believe that it is Hydraulic steering. The reason i ask what the difference is between a sump pump and bildge is that i have a switch for a bildge pump and a switch for a sump pump. So you dont think theres anything i could do as far as checking the oil etc. Also, is there a hook up on the engine to flush it out? because im used to boats that are trailered but this one stays on a slip out of the water when not being used so i cant get a flapper on it.

The members that own Mercury engines may be able to help you out here once they see this thread.

Look at the Teleflex site for more info on your steering system once you determine it is definitely hydraulic.

And this is the SeaStar hydraulic system.

In looking at the Members Boat info (left sidebar under Member Information) there are a dozen owners of Outrage 21-26's produced in the years 1995-2000.

I think you have found the site to answer you boat and motor questions.

For any motor that has been not run in a year and new to you, I, personally, would buy a Mercury service and an owners manual for your model/year outboard.

Look at the maintenance schedule and do the yearly items, especially

- drain and refill the lower unit oil
- remove and grease the prop shaft
- change the spark plugs
- internal fuel filter
- grease all the lubrication points (cowling latches, linkages, tilt and pivots)
- inspect all the hoses and wires for wear
