I have a Montauk 170. I have a mount for an auxiliary motor on the transom. I fish a lot in very shallow water and I troll in the Atlantic off Little River SC. I would like to use a Mercury 3.5 because it has a 360 degree travel. Does anybody have a 3.5 as an aux motor on a 17 or a 170 and what can it do?
Thanks
Harvey

Harvey as far as kicker motors on a 17 my experience has been the HP equals max mph give or take 1 mph up to about 8 hp. So a 3.5 hp motor will move your boat at about 4 mph at max throttle in calm conditions.

I have used many different kicker engines and found them all to be relatively the same, give or take a mph or two. The key to a kicker is in the prop. The wider, flatter blades will offer the most thrust.

Any reason you have selected the Merc 3.5? If you already own one, then hang it off the back and try it out. The only problem I would see with that little motor is it has a small prop and the thrust won't be that great.
