Every boat sits a little differently in the water so there is exact measurement anyone can give you. I would suggest you put it in the water for a day or so.........see exactly where the waterline is and then paint about 3/4 above that mark all the way around. I didn't really want to paint the bottom on mine either, but in salt water if you leave it in even for a short period of time the growth begins and it can be a real bugger to remove if left for any length of time.
