Has anyone done any business with Ed's Marine in Ashland, VA? They seem to have good prices on their outboards. If so, did you have a positive or negitive experience?

If you are going to buy it there and take it somewhere else for service, you'll be fine. Make sure you have a local dealer in mind for service and make sure he'll take it in. Whether you bought from the dealer who services it, makes a difference in who gets service first. Most any dealer will service his own customers first especially when it comes to a warranty repair. This is an unwritten rule in the industry whether anyone admits to it or not. Also, make sure you pay close attention to the serial numbers and verify it against what year/model you are being are being told it is. New doesn't always mean this model year. I have seen their Boat Show specials and they will put a "new" 2006 motor on a 2008 boat. May not seem like much it makes a big difference in value. Buyer beware.

When factoring in rigging and labor, you might find your "local" dealers price to be about the same as Ed's engine. Unless you plan on doing the installation yourself, I would get a price from your local dealer for installation, then add that to the price of Ed's motor.

Another thing to keep in mind (at least with Etec) is that even if you do the rigging yourself, you still have to pay a dealer to initialize the motor with their computer. So add that to the price as well. I personally would feel a bit weird pulling into my local dealer (with whom I do a lot of business) to have an engine that I didn't buy there initialized. I'm sure he would do it, for a price.

I live less than five miles from their store. I often use their website to compare prices and for quick links to manufacturers websites. I noticed if you look at dealer network at Evinrude for instance they are not listed as an authorized dealer. Hmmm. All I know is they have a colorful reputation locally. Do a google search.

LabCab is correct about their local reputation. Check with your local dealer first as they can do just as well on price as Ed's can and you will get better service.

I looked at Ed's when I purchased my E-Tec and was turned off by their prices on everything but the engine.
