I am building a new console for a 1971 Outrage 21 (ribside) and was wondering what specific species of teak was used by Boston Whaler in 1971.

This is hull number 00247 (stencil number) and I want to keep it original. I did look into getting Burmese Teak at $25.00 per board foot. I am constructing the new base out of 3/4 Marine Plywood (7 layer Fir). Any information would be greatly appreciated.

If you can find Burmese Teak for $25 a board/ft, jump all over it. Since most of the teak used for your project is under 3 ft, some vendors may offer a discount on shorts.

If I were making the base, I would prefer Meranti Mahogany "Hydrotek" or Okoume over the Douglas Fir Marine Plywood. Both are be BS1088 certified. The surface of both the Hydrotek or Okoume is smoother than the Fir. Both epoxy & paint up very well.

It does not really matter what specific specie of Teak Whaler used. It was probably Burmese Teak (Tectona Hamiltoniana) but it could have been Common Teak (Tectona Grandis) as well, or some of both.

The reality is that Burmese Teak available now is the last we will probably ever see. With the political strife in Myanmar (formerly Burma) no new teak is coming out of there and the trees that still stand are endangered.

Plantation grown teak is what will be available in the future once the existing caches of Burmese teak are all used up (and the prices will continue to climb as that becomes even more scarce.)

To tell you about teak.
My purveyor of "finishing" wood here for high end types of building will have it available in limited quantities for $45/foot.
And to the fact that he has less then last year due to a bug infestation coming in with his last shipment, did not help the situation neither.
A bonfire had to be built in order to save the rest of the inventory.
In any event;
You may consider the alternative as in Mahogany and Zebra wood.
Pricey but still quite adequate for your needs.
You may also consider in looking at getting a used console for the same model's year and to do a careful refit on the unit.
I am sure that some of the guys could provide some leads on the location of such a nautical piece and remnant of of the Outrage Classic 21 dumptruck.
