I'm a new member and a new Montauk 17 owner.

Question: What does it mean when someone says that a classic Montauk or Whaler.

Are they refering to year the boat was built. I quess before that changed the style from teak wood to fiberglass?

any help would be appriciated

Thanks

The first Montauks were built in 1973 on the nonsmirked 16' hulls. Then in 1976 Whaler changed the hull design to a smirked hull which stayed in production mostly unchanged until 2002. The later ones lost all of the wood on the interiors which to me ended the classic era. Each will have their one take but most any second generation Montauk "could" be considered a cassic. Heck eve the first generation could be.

A classic Montauk is any Montauk built before 2002 when an entirely new and different model was introduced.

In general. the term "classic" used with regard to a Whaler, means the hull was designed during the period when Whaler was owned by Dick Fisher and later CML and produced hulls designed by Bob Dougherty after Fisher left the company.

A profound change of direction occurred when Boston Whaler was bought by Reebok and the Dougherty was shown the door.

New, and completely different hull designs began to emerge even as the classic designs lived on for some models. The classic Montauk had the longest life of them all being replaced by a different boat only in 2002.

It is interesting to note that many of the classic designs live on in the Government and Commercial Products division. That is telling.

Thank you for your input, That was helpfull. So since I have a new to me 1993 Montauk 17 with Teak wood, this would be considered a classic montauk or Whaler!

Thank's all for your Help!

Yep. As long as the original console and RPS haven't been replaced by aftermarket versions.

Here are some examples of original classic Montauks with the original consoles and RPS (Reversible Pilot Seat).

Doesn't necessarily need to have teak to be a Classic as Tom mentions. Just the design of the hull and the original interior configuration.
