Hope I am posting in the right place. Currently my 1991, 15' Whaler Sport has a 2001 90 hp Johnson. It is a little much on power for my boat that is rated for 70 hp max,but does okay. My Dad just bought a large pontoon with a 75 Mercury 2 stroke that is a 2005 model. He wants to trade motors with me since he needs more power and I need less. My question is that I have been told by several people in the past to stay away from Mercury motors. This particular motor has very few hours on it and since it is four years newer than mine I am wondering what anyone else thinks? All we would need to pay for is the labor for switching out the motors. Are these reliable motors? Is this going to be a good motor for salt water use? Please let me know what you honestly think.
Thankyou
Marty Durham

I would make the trade. I am probably in the minority but I prefer merc. over omc. The only motor I liked more than my mercs. was the 70 yamaha I had on my 15 footer.

Is the merc a 3 cylinder? I am thinking it should be and will take a little weight off the stern of your 15.

sound like you and pops win swap them out.

I have had 3 merc's, all 3 gave me a headache. All the OMC engines I have had ran like champs. I had 2 Yamaha's, they ran good. I think it is a matter of opinion. If the 75 starts right up and runs smooth, I think it is a no-brainer.
