For my needs and finances this boat fits perfect. I am picking it up this saturday and am glad to be back in a whaler. I had an 84 13' that was absolutly flawless in operation and I sold it for what I bought it for 3 years later. This site has so far been a valuabel source of info. I am looking forward to being the caretaker of this rare boat. I would like to hear from any SL owners who really like their boats and can provide any tips or hints. I know it is not a classic but i will definitley report on its performance compared to my 16"

Here she is

I also just got my 16SL from Chesapeake Whalertowne in Maryland.
If it meets your needs thats' all that matters.
I got my16SL for the same reason, it was a perfect size FAMILY boat for our needs at this time. Rick the owner of Whalertowne took me out and gave me detail instruction on how to make the 16SL shine on the water.
It was fast to plane, easy to control even in a full hard turn at full speed. It has a 90 yamaha 2 stroke.
Make sure you replace all the old fuel lines including vent line.

Good luck and enjoy your 16SL (16 Sweet Lady)

Thanks RC- I didnt think I would get a reply on this thread. I wonder how many 16sl owners there are on the board. It would be nice to be able to share info.

Very nice Whaler and certainly no reason to be ashamed to be the proud owner of it. Get out and enjoy your new baby!

Not sure why you would downplay it.......it's a great looking boat and if it serves your purpose then it is also a great boat!

It was meant as tongue in cheek. In my research for the boat it seemed alot of purists did not approve. Dont get me wrong, I love this boat and will enjoy every minute of owning it. Once I get it home and clean it up I will post some after pics, and then on to the lakes of WNC.

smkymntn,

A lot of purists only like the older style Whaler hulls.
It's like that with automobiles and many other things. Certain years, certain styles, etc...

Start a personal page when you are ready and share your photos with all of us.

Hey Joe,

My other obsession is landcruisers and can totally relate to the standard of a brand drawing loyalty. I just put up my personal page, and here is a shot of my other obsession ...errr hobby

smkymntn,

Problem with personal page and photos.
There is no outside photo hosting links allowed to photobucket, imageshack, etc...
Please upload the photos to whalercentral.
Personal Page FAQ's

I moved a couple of photos into your personal page for you to get you started.

I also see another member has a 16SL in the personal page section.

smkymntn,
A Whaler nut and a Cruiserhead both, hmm? Me too. The only trouble is I have a REAL Whaler (15 CC) and a REAL LandCruiser (FJ40)!

And you call yourself a nut. Sheesh . . .

just kidding of course :grin (where's the flipoff icon when you need it?)

Hey Ted,
It makes sense since whalers are like the landcruisers of boat. You have to own one to understand.

Thanks Joe, I will get used to the rules around here.
Well Im off to bed and getting up at 3am to pick up the boat. 14 hours round trip- oh yeah its gonna be fun.

We have a 92 SL with a 70 4stroke Suzuki and absolutely love it. It also has the subrella on top. Just returned from a 12 day mountain lake fishing derby with friends and it performed beautifully. Another 16SL owner ( suggested trim tabs ) which we installed before I went and they helped with stability when planning. Keep in touch and you can view my boat when you sign up and see my profile.

so after driving 1000 miles round trip I am not yet a 16sl owner. The boat was in a sorry state. Its amazing what pictures and desperate owner can do to boats description. There were cracks in the hull by the bow (about 3 feet long), there were cracks around the motor mount, cracks in the deck, holes everywhere, mold everywhere, guages didnt work, motor barely ran, corrosion on every metal bit. For the money I was paying I wanted like new- but this boat was far from it. thanks to whalercentral I had a decent idea of how to check out these boats. The silver lining is there is another 16sl local to me and I am just waiting for the seller to contact me.
