I just read about a restoration of a 1977 21' Outrage. The owner stated that "Easy off works great" removing the bottom paint. Has anyone else tried this? Easy Off oven cleaner removes bottom paint? Will it harm the gel coat?

yes, it does work. get the boat warm if possible, easy - off is heat activated. But you can spray on the bottom, let it set for 20 min then wash off.
Works real well.

Be sure to use the ORIGINAL type. Look out for the fumes.

Thanks for the information. I would love to get the bottom paint off of my Outrage. This sounds too easy. Any other experiences with this process?

You should get a large plastic drop cloth and put under your work to help with the cleanup and also, if you are going to do this while the boat is on the trailer, make sure you cover the metal portion of your trailer with plastic.

It is not quite as "easy" as it seems. I worked for a long time removing 20 years of bottom paint from my 15' Henry O (whaler-like) using various strippers. Easy Off was the 'easiest', but that is relative. Some ofthe bio strippers worked well too. The easy off would have gotten real expensive fast with the number of cans I went through .I used it mostly on tight spots like the chines, etc. Also wear good protective clothing. I wore holes in my gloves on occaision or had drips inside them and it burns holes in your flesh fast.

Heat is your friend with this process. When I did my Montauk I put very hot flood lights about 2 feet away during the summer. It still took a couple applications and wet sanding to get it entirely clean -- when you are done though it looks great!
