Thread subject: Whaler Central - Boston Whaler Boat Information and Photos :: Name: Orca or Yonah

Time to stick a name on the Montauk. It's been a year, and I'm down to two names:

ORCA = "Killer Whale" & Jaws reference. I have yet to see a Whaler with this name, but undoubtedly there is one - so originality may go out the window.

YONAH = Cherokee Indian for "Bear" - My boat lived most of it's life on Lake Burton - in the shadows of Mt Yonah here in North Georgia. I'm a Georgia native, and the mountains here have been a big part of my life.

Thoughts?

I've seen many ORCAs but never seen a YONAH

In this instance, Yonah certainly makes more sense to me.

My wife is a big UGA fan. I'm more of an Ohio State fan.

Previous owner trolled spoons on Burton. I found a number of old spoons in the rigging tunnel. I'll be heading to lake Jocassee in a few months for a bit of camping and fishing - same deal there I think. Trout - Spoons.

Baha -- thats Ahab spelled backwards

I like Shamu as well.

But Yonah is more original than Orca.

I vote for Yonah, very unique and seems to be more personally attached to you. I live in the San Juan Islands area and every fricken boat has a Orca name on it including every other whaler so that's my other reason. But I do like Yonah! Good Luck!

Yonah. It's much more original and it has significance.

I vote for "Yonah" (nobody else has it), several times I had my "Brush Kit" out ready to put on a name (and a boat should have a name to I.D. it in case of a "search" for it) but, every time I went to do it, I would look at her all cleaned up and say to myself "She look's so "Classy", that it would be like putting a boat hitch on a Jaguar. I am going to put a big yellow "X" on the bottom this year for safety in case of a search, I hope it's never needed.

Yonah it is. Thanks.

Part of the hesitation has been not wanting to clutter up the looks, but at the same time, I make my living as a graphic designer. I will probably do something simple on the port stern like the attached graphic.

So now we get technical. I've had a number of sailboats. On the radio we were S/V "Boat Name". What is proper for a Montauk? M/V? F/V?

Matt, I was going to vote for Yonah, but you've already decided. But you can have more fun with that graphic - since that's your business. Yonah is a mountain, turn the A into a mountain and run the "YON" up one side and the "H" down the other, or something like that. We did a simple, but fun graphic for our boat - see avatar.

On the radio, we just say "vessel whatever" - or we will, once I fix the radio's antenna connection:-).

Matt, let me know when you are going to Jocassee. I fish there often. Love to see the boat. BG

You could make the "O" look like a Bear face by adding "Ears" two eyes and a nose.

I agree, have some fun with the design, make it unique to you. We had Janice @ Magic Brush do one for our Outrage with a graphic integrated, can't wait for the weather to warm up so I can see what it looks like on the sides.
