I've heard conflicting information on the wood used in the sakkonet casting platform. I believe mahogany fir and pine were all painted white in the original. What would the problem be with using pine and staining and varnishing to match my console rather then painting white?

any reason I could paint it and not varnish it?

This boat will be trailerd and covered as long as I own it.
