I recently posted a question regarding a fuel issue I was having with my 1985 60 horse Johnson outboard. The problem was isolated to a malfunctioning brass gas tank connector. The original owner advised that he had a similar problem and the replaced the part with a generic version. I replaced it with the proper Johnson part. However, when I re-tipped the plastic gas hose connector with the allegedly appropriate female plastic gas hose connector, something wasn’t quite right. The plastic receiver hole with the large ball bearing was too large and fit loosly over the brass tank connector. I noticed that the original plastic tip slot was smaller and had a small ball bearing. I could not pump up the gas hose bulb while the large plastic tip installed. When I reinstalled the original tip, with the small hole, the motor cranked and ran perfect.

So which is it? With a 1985 Johnson outboard does the motor require the larger tip or the smaller tip? Something was apparently mis-marked on the product packaging because the male Johnson brass connector evidently did not match the female plastic hose tip. Because the small tip on the motor end of the hose appears to be original, it seems that the SMALL tip is the proper Johnson part. The larger tip is most likely meant for the Mercury/Yamaha version and I was the lucky one who purchased the mislabeled part. BUT if the Johnson requires the larger tip then the motor might not be getting the proper fuel input for it to operate properly.

I had the same issue when I bought our boat last spring, two different sizes. For your engine, a 60 hp, you're fine with the smaller connector and will experience no fuel restriction issues.
