Hi to all,
I have an Outrage 17 II (1997) and I'd like to know if it's better a 150 Hp (4 stroke) or a 115 hp (4 stroke)?
Is it too heavy the 150 hp?

As your boat is rated for a maximum of 150 hp, you can use the same Quick Engine Guide as the Outrage 18 uses.

The less weight the better but if you water ski, a 115 hp 4 stroke might not be enough for that model. I had a 115 hp 2 stroke and wouldn't want any less hole shot for any reason and a 115 hp 4 stroke would most likely give you less hole shot.

Ive got a 1999 17 Outrage with a 135 Opti on it. At 492 lbs, I have to say she pretty heavy back there. No problem with performance, but with a full fuel load my scuppers a partially submerged at displacement speeds.

Boston Whaler told me this:
"The maximum hp for the 1997 17' Outrage is 150 while the minimum requirement in order to plane satisfactorily with a light load is 90 hp.
The maximum recommended engine weight is 430 lbs (195 kg). Exceeding this weight may cause the boat to porpoise at mid-throttle, increase planing time and put interior floor scuppers under water.
If the original engine is still operating, you may want to place the weight difference (between the four stroke and the two stroke) towards the stern of the boat to see if it will effect the way that you use the boat."
So if I want to use a 4 stroke I can only any 115 hp or a suzuki 140 hp (186 kg/410 lb) but not a 150hp :(

What do you think about suzuki DF 140 4s ?

be glad when Yamaha comes out with a lighter 150 4 Cyl.

I'm picking up a 1999 17 Outrage on Friday.. Hope the 125 Mercury last for at least a few years, but then i'll upgrad to the 150, and I hope by then they have a 150 4 Cyl in the 400 Lbs range

Given the outboard weight recommendation, I would select the ETEC 150 hp. At 418 lbs, it will fit the weight limit recommendation and give you the horsepower suggested.

I also agree with Phil...
No need to wait for something that may never happen?

The E-Tec 150 is 6 cylinder and weighs 418 pounds...
If you want a 4 cylinder, the E-Tec 130 HO is 4 cylinder and weighs in at 405 pounds...

I'm guessing the linerless blocks will work their way down the Yamaha (and other manufacturers) lines, but it will take a while. I'd be thinking about the eTEC 150, or since more is always better, the 150HO is available at the same weight.

I agree about the Etec. The 150 is the same block (2.6L) as the 175 and the 200 and is an absolute powerhouse of an engine.

The E-Tec 150 HO seems to be only available in the 20 inch shaft version which will not work on single engine applications on most Outrage models which take a 25 inch shaft.

HI-

I am also curious about Egly's question: does anyone have experience with the Suzuki 140 4S?

I hope I am a few years away from re-powering but did not think there was a 'real' 150hp 4S option out there due to weight.

Any first hand reports on the Suzuki?

Bummer. Still, no problem - just by a 150 and a 150HO and swap the lower units, right?

You'd have to swap the mid-sections. No need though as the std 150 has plenty of power.
