Hi gents, I have a 1974 montauk I am planning a trolling motor project for this coming winter. I’m looking at either a minnkota or motor guide saltwater bow mount with spot lock for fishing. My main concern is the lack of real estate on the deck of a non smirked hull to make this happen. I know it’s been done but I’m having trouble finding any pictures or threads related to mounting a trolling motor on an older model montauk vs a newer or smirked hull. I found this product from another thread which may assist in the mounting but the best exact location I’m still unsure of. Any ideas or forum members tackle this project yet on this hull?

Many members have installed a trolling motor on either the port or starboard bow "pad".

Typical installation includes lag screws or nutserts.

If you have a bow rail, it can be modified to create a hinged section to allow the motor to be deployed or retracted.

Thanks. The plan is to use the bow pad my only concern was it looks like the bow pad on the smirked hull was larger making this an easier task. Looking at the quick release mounts it looks like I can just install the smaller puck to the pad area. My next question is what materials make up the bow pad of my 1974? Wood underneath? Can the mount be screwed into something solid or will a complete hole have to be drilled from the bow pad deck through the bottom of the hull?

There's a wood locating diagram in the Resources section here dated 1975. My 1988 has the same wood that I mounted the starboard puck to for the TM. You do not need nor want to drill through the hull to the bottom of the hull.

The bow pad area is fiberglass with embedded plywood and foamed space.

Use a composite puck and use lag screws or toggle bolts or nutserts. Seal the holes with Boat Life sealant to ensure no water intrusion.

Do not through bolt.
