I just purchased a 1964 Whaler. It's been on lakes its entire life. Never had bottom paint. Gel coat has expected glazing cracks and in a few spots (very minor) you can see fiberglass.

I'm thinking about having it re-gel coated.

My questions are what is the perfect engine for that hull?

And I had a 1969 restored Eastport with a new Suzuki 70 hp 4 stroke. As much as I loved wood console/seats I'm 6' 2". I have a console from a 22' Outrage. I'd rather have that and a high lean-on seat.

Suggestions, thoughts, opinions????

Be easy on me.

I repowered a 1972 - 16 a few years back with a DF60 and its WOT was 36 mph with a stainless prop. Fantastic gas mileage and boat was very easy to handle. That boat was restored and sold.

I now have a 1968 16 with a 2000 Johnson 90 2S. For reference, my WOT with the Johnson 90 is 41 mph.

Plan to repower with a Suzuki DF60 to keep weight down. Possibly a DF70.

I am going with Suzuki again since dealer / service marina is 1/2 mile away and very good.

If convenience or money were no object, the Yamaha F70 would be hard to beat. If you can get one !
