I know the new 170 Montauk 60 year anniversary got a lot of press but they redid the 150 also. Did anybody see the Boattest review of this newly designed 150 Montauk?
Pretty nice write up and I'm happy that my 2008 performance still coincides with the 2018 except the 2018 apparently it is a better ride.

I have a 2015 150 Super Sport. Where the boat meets the water, not a whole lot of difference from the 150 Montauk. But I see some things in the video that were interesting:

1) the Montauk control cables and wiring run through a tunnel, which is a lot neater than the Super Sport. Much cleaner looking and makes a little bit more "roomy" feel to the boat.

2) the redesigned bow light/chock looks to be a bit heavier and more thoughtful than what I have, which is already nice. Remains to be seen, in use, however.

3) It seems from the video that there are a lot of small things added to the Montauk that a Super Sport does not have. I got mine pretty much "barebones" and added a lot of things to it. Switch panel, gauges, storage clips, bags, etc.

4) Somehow the Montauk, without the curved "freeboard" of the SS, looks a lot deeper than a 15 old-Sport would have been. The SS give a good feeling of security with higher side walls than the classic Whalers. Basically, the curved top rail of the SS was patched onto a standard 15' hull ... increasing the side height and adding a bit of weight to the SS (and decreasing its capacity). A good trick. Nonetheless, I think it's smart that Whaler kept the classic look, the straight line from stem to stern across the rails, on the Montauk. If they had curved the Montauk up ... I think they destroy something ... not every BW needs to be a Dauntless, all stylish and etc.

5) But I have no regrets. The SS fits in my garage, the Montauk won't. Plus, I got under a railroad bridge last summer that a Montauk could not have cleared ...

It seems like Whaler is thinking right. I recall from reading the book "Unsinkable", that they have this idea that they need to revamp models all the time. I disagree. The Montauks are AWESOME boats that should not be tinkered with. Small, evolutionary changes, like what they did with the new Montauks is good. But keep the excellent basic idea of the boat ...

Bill I agree with your points 1 thru 4, but not with 5 as my 150 Montauk which sits on the same Caravan trailer with the hinged tow coupling as your 15 ft SS fits perfectly in my standard smaller garage with room to walk in front and the back of the boat when parked.

Yeah, I have a goofy garage setup. Big workbench on the back wall limits my length ... the motor, tilted up a bit, just fits under. I have the folding trailer tongue, a deal saver. My door is short though ... I think it was a replacement and they did something funny with the trim ...

My dad's boat, when I was a kid, we could prop the garage door up a few more inches by jamming a two-by-four in between the frame and the door. That's the only way his boat would clear. (ugly if we missed, as it was a walk-through with windows).

I always envisioned myself in a 17 Montauk ... standing ... I love the center consoles. After two summers in my Super Sport ... I don't regret the choice I made under my limitations. It's a really good boat. Next boat ... won't fit in the garage at all ... and I'll keep it at a marina, either docked or racked. But I don't know if there will be a next boat ... I'm pretty happy.

Sometimes I'm a little envious of the guys who find a beat up older Whaler and fix it up. I'm a fixer-upper, I was just scared when I bought mine, so I bought new. Mostly afraid of the motor. A little afraid of wet foam. Maybe next boat will be a project Montauk 17. Lovingly restore, while keeping my boat ... winter project, summer boating (I'm on Lake Erie). Maybe ...

I'm a DIY and all my previous boats in the past 3 decades were at least 20 to 30 years old when acquired and some 50+ years old. I loved restoring them and using them extensively, no matter if they were 15ft or 36ft long, single inboard or twin inboard but mostly wooden hulls with exception of the larger sailboats.
The admiral had enough of me always working on them and said we get a modern Whaler and she wouldn't let me get a 17ft as thart was to difficult for her to trailer so here we are as safe always starting good running little Montauk
