I personally don't see anything wrong with this boat - to each his own. They only modified few parts (the gauge panel). Restoring an older Whaler is getting difficult as most of you know. Original parts are harder and harder to find. As far as paint, what's wrong with Red, White and Blue. Little patriotic tribute.
Buddy of mine just got a 1983 18' Outrage (in bad shape) and is contemplating similar set up. His sides are wobbly and need some body work and paint. Gel coat is difficult and time consuming to apply and to get it shiny. Couple of coats of Awlgrip or Imron and you can be done in half a day.
