Hello Spliterspatter,
I repowered my 15 foot 1995 Dauntless with a F70 this season. I couldn't be happier with the performance for the size boat I have and picked the F70 because it was only 7 pounds or so heavier than the old 70 HP Evinrude which it replaced. I usually only cruise with me, (270 lbs) and my wife, (140 lbs). When we add another couple of similar total weight, the performance is just adequate and not really good for all day cruising. I believe on your 17 you would want to stick with as close to the original max H.P rating for the boat which is 100-120 H.P. In that class I believe the Mercury 115 which is listed as the same weight as the Honda 100 wouldt be the lightest max H.P choice. You could also look at the 90 HP ETEC which while the same weight as the Honda 100 or Merc 115 will give you the hole shot and planing performance of a 2 stroke.
