Thread subject: Whaler Central - Boston Whaler Boat Information and Photos :: Structure of the Splashwell?

On my 1974 Montauk a previous owner has run the electrical wiring through the splashwell. Meaning above the bilge/drain they drilled a hole into the front of the splash well and then another on the other side to run the power from the the main breaker to the stern power block. (why they did this I shall never know)

This always bothered me and this weekend I noticed that the 4200 that was used to seal this hole is failing thus I assume letting some water get in (as the boat filled up during a rain storm this weekend).

Thus I am wondering if anyone knows what is 'under/in' the splashwell. I am hoping it is all lined with fiberglass and there is not any exposed foam in there.

I may just rerun the wires and seal the holes. Not before it dries though. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks
- Joe

Should just be foam in the center - i.e. the wire traverses a layer of gelcoat -> fiberglass -> foam -> fiberglass -> gelcoat. The hole looks small enough that you could use a spectrum color matched gelcoat patch kit to fill the hole after you remove the wire.

Thanks. I failed to mention that I can feel a void right behind the front hole. The exit hole is on the inside of the splashwell..does that make sense? There is certainly an area inside the splashwell between the two holes. So perhaps the correct question I should be asking: is the inside of the splashwell all lined with fiberglass? or is the 'floor' wood/foam?

Regardless I need to seal it up. I am just so curious about all aspects of these hulls.

I'm pretty sure its all foam and you should be fine sealing it up. Thats the way it is on the 15 hull. Others who have a 17 hull should be able to confirm.

Definitely just foam. The previous owner of my boat drilled a large hole to run a hose from the bilge pump through that wall into the well rather then just simply up and over. I filled it with foam, faired and gelcoated over the hole

Great to have the mystery solved! Thank you both very much for the input.
