Any one come up with a caulk color for sealing desert tan fuel tank covers? OSI Quad #450 is way to light, unless your boat is really faded.

Walt -
I recall that Sue Lodel at Beacon/Twin Cities Marine found a replacement to the matching caulk a few years ago, give her a call (920)793-2715 and report back.

I haven't found the color yet, working on it, but OSI Quad is not a good choice, in any color. It shrinks way too much, like 25%. Silicone, on the other hand, has very little shrinkage. You shouldn't have to apply multiple layers in order to fill the gaps around the cover. Also, I have deep areas that have not cured in two weeks.

I have had luck so far with Boatlife caulk. It's white but I had a can of paint mixed up in Desert Tan, at least what 33 year old desert Tan looks like now. I paint the white Boatlife. It has worked better than I anticipated, I have also used the paint to hide some Marine Tex minor repairs to hide the white,

I purchased a couple of tubes from Sue, who advised it was the original match

I used a tube of GE silicone in "Almond" color. Its the only place I use silicone on my boat because the color match is quite good. I apply by filling only the top of the groove, not down to the bottom. That makes getting in later much easier as you only have to cut through a thinner layer of silicone and your not bonding the entire underside of the deck plate to the hull. When I apply I fill the top section and use a soapy water to spray over and scrap away excess. That leaves the seam level or close to the deck level, color is pretty darn good and easy to remove if I want back in.
