I'm still sorting out the boat we got a few weeks back. It's a 1962 Sakonnet with a 1998 60 hp Merc 2 stroke.
The prop is in ok shape but I thought I'd do some research on it. The number stamped (molded in) on the prop is
48-73144A40 - according to the Merc manual, this prop is for boats up to 15' weighting up to 1000 pounds gross.
So, our boat is longer than 15' and I'm rather confident that the gross weight is way over 1000 pounds.

How much of an issues is this potentially wrong prop? What am I loosing/hurting with this prop? What would I gain with a properly matched prop?

It could be the right one, or not.

There are dozens of props that are appropriate. To know if yours is, we we need to know:

Wide open throttle (WOT) rpm's with the boat empty and just the operator. What is the WOT speed via GPS?

What do you expect to be your typical (65% of the time) load of passengers/freight/gear/supplies?

I was just going by a page out of the Merc manual.

Yes, a Tach is a must have when setting up your prop.

There are some things you can tell us now while you wait for your tach.
1. Where is the motor mounted?

My Merc is mounted in the middle hole on the top set and four up from bottom on bottom set (see photo in personal page - still having some issues uploading photos to threads)

If I'm reading my GPS correctly, our top speed GPS speed was 29+mph. We are still dialing in the GPS and I'm not 100% sure we are interpreting it correctly.

The engine height looks in the ball park and so does your top speed.

I am not sure if you can do too much better than 30 mph with a 60hp motor.

Maybe others with a 60hp motor can tell you their top speed.
