I have a 1998 60 hp Merc
Is there a rule of thumb on how long one should run engine with fresh water after an outing in salt water?

Our neighbors have told us to flush 5-7 mins and to also keep a paper clip handy to keep debris out of the top engine hole showing that the water pump is working.

Yamaha recommends "about 15-minutes" for their late model V-6 outboards

I trailered 100% in salt water.
My routine was:
Back the boat into its space.
Place vehicle in park.
Get hose and muffs.
Lower motor and attach muffs
Turn on water
Turn on motor.
Remove any freight or gear from the boat.
Clean up, wipe down the boat.
Stow all PDF's, dock lines and fenders.
Chock the wheels
Unhook the trailer and wiring harness.
Jack up the bow
Turn off the motor
Turn off the water.
Wind up hose and go inside.

Thanks! Sounds pretty much like my routine - except I detach the trailer from the car early on.

Finally located the user manual for my motor (it was hiding in a pile of other boat papers :-)
Anyway it recommends 3-5 minutes for the flush.
