The placement is based on the rotation of the propeller. You want the transducer on the downward turn of the propeller (if the propeller is standard clockwise rotation while facing it standing behind the boat......transducer on the starboard side). You do not want it in the agitation from the upward motion of the propeller. Try to make the transducer as parallel with the water as possible without installing it too low.....the angle of the bottom of the transom has you "split the difference". About 1/2 to 1/3 submerged. Angle the transducer forward so a "sight line" from the bottom of the transducer hits the bottom of the boat 2/3 up. Basically you want the transducer to read what is under the boat not behind the boat. This was the advice given to me by the local marine electronics expert.
