I've searched the forum and web. Spoke to Garmin and BW. Still don't have a solid feel on where to mount transducer on transom.
Your input is appreciated.

Thanks for that link Joe!

It appears that folks are suggesting placing the transducer on the port side... Garmin suggests the starboard side. Any plusses or minuses - pros or cons - for port or starboard?

The placement is based on the rotation of the propeller. You want the transducer on the downward turn of the propeller (if the propeller is standard clockwise rotation while facing it standing behind the boat......transducer on the starboard side). You do not want it in the agitation from the upward motion of the propeller. Try to make the transducer as parallel with the water as possible without installing it too low.....the angle of the bottom of the transom has you "split the difference". About 1/2 to 1/3 submerged. Angle the transducer forward so a "sight line" from the bottom of the transducer hits the bottom of the boat 2/3 up. Basically you want the transducer to read what is under the boat not behind the boat. This was the advice given to me by the local marine electronics expert.

Like Garris said; SB side lowest part of vertical transom, as most OB's have clockwise rotating props. Make sure you stay to the right of the bunk supporting the boat while on the trailer to avaoid damaging the transducer.

I have a 1970 16-foot classic Whaler which I believe is the same hull as yours. The transducer for my Garmin Fishfinder 400C is mounted on the port side of the transom, 13 inches on center from the boat's centerline. Its lower surface is roughly in line with the bottom of the hull, but with a slight downward angle. It works pretty well, but does lose its fix on the bottom occasionally at higher speeds. I think it needs to be lowered slightly.

Thanks for the photo Tom it is very helpful!
I am curious as to your decision to put it on the port side. A number of people suggest the port side - Garmin and others say starboard based on prop rotation.

The previous owner had multiple devices and two transducers, one to port and one to starboard. I retained just one.

Sounds like a good a reason as any - thanks. The previous owner of our boat had a very old school transducer mounted all the way out near the edge of the transom.

(I'm in Fairfield County - planning to go out on the sound and possible Candlewood Lake)

The further from the propeller the better without interfering with other functions as EJO pointed out. By the picture it looks like part of the transducer is too deep. It should be tilted slightly to get closer to matching the bottom of the boat. I can also never figure out the use of the Starboard as a "transom saver" for mounting these. Marine Starboard does not seal. Now you have 4 holes instead of two with a material that accepts sealants.

Mounted the transducer and tested it yesterday - all good. Thanks for all your input!

The transducer is not as deep in the water as the photo shows - bad angle. Left side about 1/8" more on the right.
