Hey everyone,

Im working on a 1969 13 foot sport and Im trying to take the bow eye off. Over the years the hole has enlarged and the dimples have damaged the fiberglass on the outside. Ive seen the great articles on how to make this repair, but I just cant get the damn thing unscrewed! Ive been going at it with channel locks and a ton of WD-40, but it wont loosen...

Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Best,
Mike

Mike, you'll need a couple of people at least to do this, but if you can get a good torque on the eye, then give the eye itself a series of sharp blows with a steel hammer, it should loosen up. The blows don't have to be all that hard, nor does the torque need to be extreme, but the blows to have to be "sharp" - a rubber mallet won't do the job.

Mine needed to be fixed as well.

On the inside of the boat, the rod was not flush with the top of the ring. Was able to spray penetrant there over a couple days and let sit. On the outside, I took two 1x4's and clamped around the bow eye and then these were clamped to the winch post so the eye didn't move. Was able to use a large clamp on the inside ring and it came loose.
