i am wondering if its possible to put a short shaft 20 inch outboard to my 13 ft sport ,it normally takes a longshaft or am i creating problems.the present motor is bolted about 2 fingers higher then the transom .

In Short, sell the Short shaft and purchase a long shaft.

Or trade the boat for one with a notched transom and put your short shaft motor on it.

Do not waste your time with the short shaft on the straight transom.

One other option I can think of is to look for a used Long shaft conversion. It is easy to convert a motor to Long shaft with the right parts.

You can buy these cheap sometimes.
Not sure what year your motor is but look around online or at your local motor shops etc.

sjp2, a 20 inch shaft length is usually a long shaft in smaller outboards.

What am I missing here? A 1998 13 should take a 20" motor, which is what you have.

At this point we don't know what shaft length motor he has.
I read the Short Shaft and not the length.

Short Shaft = 15 inch
Long Shaft = 20 inch

sjp2, let us know the year and model number of the motor so we know exactly what shaft length you have.

If you do have a Long Shaft 20 inch motor, then you are good to go.

Joe, I'm thinking that if it really was a 15" shaft and he had it mounted a couple of fingers up on a 20" transom, the boat would have severe problems moving at all.
