We have run our Montauk (1989 Model) with a Yamaha 60, purchased new in 2008, without backup. I would now like to fit a kicker engine 5-6 HP for reasons of safety.

Can I ask advice on shaft length and also position of mounting? The main engine is mounted on the reduced height part of the transom and, as you all know, swings to the left and right reducing the mounting locations slightly.

Is there an ideal position on the remainder of the transom for mounting ( we do have a swim ladder on the port outer)?
Really thinking about the possible presence of reinforcement for the clamps of a small outboard.

Also, is the 20" shaft the ideal for an engine on the higher section of the stern?

Sorry if these are very basic questions, but I would appreciate any advice to ensure safety and performance

long shaft mounted directly on the starboard side will work just fine.

We have a long shaft Yamaha 4hp that is the perfect size without a bracket,
on the port side dented area,
although it is almost useless in anything but calm conditions!
I got stuck once and iPhone speed was 2-3mph tops downwind!
6 probably much better...

I have a Tohatsu 6 hp Sail Pro model kicker mounted directly to the port side of my 1999 Alert 17. The Tohatsu 6 hp weighs 59 lbs and when you get the Sail Pro model an alternator and a high thrust propeller are standard equipment. This motor is a great motor for trolling and pushes my boat 6.1 mph top speed.When adding a kicker motor IMO try to stay with as light a motor as you can. I have a Yamaha F70 and the Tohatsu 6 hp for a total of 319 lbs and it is perfect.
