Thread subject: Whaler Central - Boston Whaler Boat Information and Photos :: Spectrum Outrage Grey?

Hi All, I'm plugging some holes in my transom that once bolted on some sort of bracket. My Montauk is a 1978 so the interior is Desert Tan and the exterior is Outrage Grey. I am bit color blind, so even though the Spectrum Gel Coat Paste Patch kit may not be an exact match to my specific boat, I want to start there instead of attempting to mix my own.

So, while Spectrum still has a kit named Desert Tan, there is no longer a Lt. Grey. They only have Grey Ash and Seal Grey. Does anyone know which of those would be closest to Outrage Gray?

Thanks.

Neither one is going to match at all. You would be better off buying one of the gelcoat patching kits from a place like Jamestown Distributors, about $35. That color is a very light warm grey, not cool. Using very small amounts of dark brown, blue, and red, added to the white, will get you there. Adding black to white will not work.

Jay,
Whaler Grey is not close....however I mixed 5 parts Whaler Grey to 2 parts Desert Tan was very acceptable. Try a spot or two on your hull with that mix and you can fuss with a closer match. I went a little heavier with the Desert Tan....but not much. I found that leaving the Desert Tan for Desert Tan as-is my best result. !979 22' Revenge.

The correct Whaler color code for "Outrage Grey" has evidently been lost by Whaler, which is probably why Sp.ctrum is no longer making it. Both Spectrum and Mini-Craft told me the color code came from Whaler, Both were wrong, not even close - way too white, as mentioned.

So for any Whaler, 1971 Ribsides up though the outer hulls through 1982, you cannot buy pre-matched gelcoat - period. You have to blend it yourself. I have not been able to find the correct color, for my Ribside, my 1975 Outrage 19 outer hull, nor the 1979 Montauk outer hull.

Right now I am in need of some of this Ribside 21 color, so I will be sending a plug cut out of my 1971 Ribside console base for a courtesy light (same color as hull) for a custom color matched batch. They require a gallon (4 qt containers) for a custom match, at a cost of about $175. Even then, I may still have to do a small amount of custom blending for a perfect match.

For those needing the outer Outrage Grey hull color, a group buy may make some sense if an accurate color sample can be sent in. That is often the problem - finding a sample of hull gelcoat to submit.

OK, thanks all. I'll get a patch kit and mix the color myself...I'll just use another set of eyes to assist in the matching.

Finnegan, wouldn't a group buy be difficult as every hull will have a bit of a different color due to age, etc?

Finnegan....thanks for the terminology....my mind thought Outrage Grey but my hands typed Whaler Grey.
