I know the standard length for a 13 is 6ft but empirecovers.com is having a 40% off sale right now and I can get an 8ft top for $30 more. Is bigger better for bimini's or is there something I'm missing? Also, royal blue or red?

I think the answer to your size question depends on where you operate. Where we do most of our boating, a large bimini is indispensable due to the summer heat and humidity -- shade is a must. Farther north, for instance in New England, some consider biminis optional or even unnecessary.

The "flying top" sold by Mills for some models is so small it doesn't even merit the name "bimini". Which may be partly explained by Mills' location up on Long Island with a climate more like New England. Around here (Chesapeake), a "flying top" would not really be adequate. Whaler now being located in Florida, they don't seem to offer a "flying top" anymore, instead offering biminis.

Bigger is better if it's shade you're after, but there are some downsides -- especialy for fishing -- as the size grows it can become more of an obstacle on the boat.
