Joe,

I don't have enough room/clearance in the splash well to get the steering cable rod out of the tilt tube. Any tricks / recommendations that would allow me to get it out without removing/hoisting the motor? Thank you.

The only trick is to loosen the engine bolts so you can angle the motor to get clearance.

You loosen the starboard side bolts a bit and the port side as much as you can but keep them attached.

Use the trailer jack to help steady the motor (keep the skeg on the ground). Having a friend to help makes it much easier.

Phil, thank you. One quick follow-up question ... it looks like I'll get more clearance if I loosen the port bolts slightly and then loosen the starboard bolts enough to rotate the motor enough so that the tilt tube is now angled to allow me to feed the steering cable from behind the splash well (from outside the back of the transom) ... this make sense?

Whatever works to get the job done. Go for it.
