I would like to add a custom made mahogany seat behind my RPS. Cross board only. Anyone have experience with this? Worried about adding weight to the back of the boat

Consider a 5/4" x 12" board, either single piece or glued up laminate.

It can sit on the gunnel and have a folding support leg if needed.

I am having my carpenter make one right now for my 1995 Montauk 17. It will be 1x2 teak set upright with 3 one inch spacers between each to reduce the weight. My boat had a rear seat so I'm using the old hardware to hold in place and allow it to be removed. I'm putting the battery underneath it.
I would promise pictures but my carpenter is slow.

I always have a thwart board seat (no seatback) to use as an optional assessory in my boat. The dimensions of the board is 60 inches long by 15 inches wide by 5/4 inches thick, solid mahogany. If you cut the 60 inch length precisely and straight, the board will torsion fit into the thwart channels and you do not need to screw it down to the interior hull. The utility of the 60 inch board is that I can install it in the transom area where up to 3 persons can sit on it, or in front of the console and use it as either a seat or a standing platform for casting. I can remove it easily if I do not need it; it weights @29 lbs and does not need/have a center floor support. The 5/4 thick solid mahogany is strong enough to hold considerable weight.

You can look at the first picture on my personal page for ideas. I built this 25 years ago and it still does its job perfectly. Dual batteries, water separater, battery switch and stern light storage under adds much need storage area.

Maybe for sitting but a 280# person standing on it might break it if only supported on a 5ft span. Don't ask me why I know. Go with 1" slotted.
