When BW increased the max hp rating for the 190 Montauk to 135hp for 2008-2009 some were sold with a 135hp Mercury Verado weighing 510lbs. How could they do that when the max engine weight is listed as 410lbs.?

That's my Montauk with the 135 Verado. I don't know the engine weight but it is the L4 Gen 2 engine which I believe is the lightest of all the Verados. That engine is available with up to 200 HP at the same weight. The only difference being the ECU programming. I'm at the beach so I'll check the engine weight when we re at home for a couple of days next week. Maybe the shaft length is a factor.

When my warranty expires I may become the only owner of a 200 HP powered 190 Montauk.

Boston Whaler moved from a maximum horsepower rating to a maximum weight rating many years ago.
As Mercury introduced a new line of lighter inline 4 cylinder Verado motors the maximum horsepower motors available increased.

First came the L4 135, then the L4 150 was introduced, followed my the 175 and 200.

The 2015 model Montauk 190 has a maximum engine weight of 530 lbs. The Verado L4 200 motor is listed as weighing 510 lbs dry.

Page 2-3 of the 2009 owners manual states that max engine weight is 410 lbs. So you saying that those with a 2008-9 model with the 135hp Verado(510lbs) are not adhering to the max engine weight?

I may be wrong. Whaler would not exceed a certified capacity limit.

Looking at historical information for capacity limits and Mercury engine specs is hard. Mercury no longer offers a 135 and has also introduced redesigned FourStroke motors so their site is unhelpful.

If you want to get to the bottom of this, I would go to the source and contact Boston Whaler Customer Service. They would have the records.

Since the E Tec is the only 135 hp currently available and it weighs 433 lbs; an owner of a 2008-2009 would not be able to re-power with maximum horsepower and stay within the weight guidelines.
