I am looking at an older probably 1970's Montauk 17. It belongs to a friend of mine who got it from his father in law. It has been wharehouse kept until 6 months ago and is now outside covered by a tarp. It has light blue decking and the center console is white painted wood with 3 vertical drawers on the left side. I've never seen a center console like this on the Montauk. It has an old 65 Johnson motor, the transom looks good and the trailer looks good too. He's asking $1200. What do yall think? It probably hasn't been used in 20 years.

Definitely not a Montauk with a blue interior.
The Montauks also had a fiberglass console and not wood.

1973 was the first year of the Montauk.

I would think you are looking at a Nauset with blue interior and wood console.

Price is right even if the 65hp motor is shot.

Take it for a spin and if it floats and runs the price is more than right as an old Whaler. Stencil number would tell you what kind of Whaler it is, as will the boat title, like Joe said not a Montauk.
Good luck.

The 17 hull was changed somewhat in 1976 and the newer ones seem more desirable.
The wood console with vertical drawers doesn't sound like an original Whaler console.
There a several articles online for checking for water in the hull and them removing it. This is sometimes a problem with older hulls.
