I just picked up a 1968 Boston Whaler that is in good shape. Does anyone know what "style/model" it is? What should I do for a console and seating? How about power...any suggestions on HP? Hopefully the picture links work.

ETEC 90 Hp seems to be the choice for top of the hp range
Do a search on google for replacement whaler wood center consoles
And bring her Back to her glory !!!

I was wondering...if a newer style console or the original wood type would be better. As the pictures show it's pretty gutted but I got it at a good price I think. A 90 etec ought to push it well i'm sure. I'll keep it in mind.
Probably a stupid question to you guys but, anyone know what model it is and what it would look like new. Can't seem to find anything on the Google. Should it have bow rails? What was the original seatin and console type etc...

The model depended on the length and the interior layout. Since you don't have an interior, it can be what you want.

Oh sorry, thought i had that in the first post. It's titled as 17' so i'm assuming it's a 16'7". Where do i find the HIN on this hull? Nothing on the transom.

I searched both the well and box and don't see anything. Is this okay? Should i have a tag engraved with the title hull# and placed somewhere?

It's fine that you don't see it it's painted on to the hall when the boats were originally made and looks to be like somebody probably painted the interior of the boat

This won't cause problems with Marine patrol/law enforcement? I'm just used to having a number..lol. Any suggestions on places to purchase consoles, seating, and hatches? I know Google search, but figured asking the people who know best, would be better. By the way, I paid $2600 for the stripped hull on a like new aluminum trailer. Seemed like a real fair price considering the hulls condition. Did I do good??

Given that the trailer alone is probably worth 800-1000 dollars, you probably did okay.

It's quite obvious that the boat has been worked on - the rub rail is not original nor is the color...so it depends on how well the previous guy did any repairs and prep for the paint/gelcoat that is on there now.

You can buy wood interiors from a couple sources online. The benefits/drawbacks between the two main vendors are as follows: One will deliver most parts to you pretty much next day; however, the quality can be a little iffy - especially for the wooden consoles which have been reported to have delam problems (probably due to non-phenolic glue in the ply, or some other factor). The other source, which is no longer a recommended vendor on this site, has quality that is second to none, but they can take a long time to deliver (and the prices are a bit higher). If you can wait for your interior (up to 5 months), they are the way to go. They can also customize the interior to your specs (raise the console height, etc).

A clean, low maintenance option would be to just put a non-Whaler console and a leaning post in it and go.

The best thing about this buy is that you have a completely blank slate - it's up to you what you do with it!

Oh, I have the title for the boat and registration for the trailer. I just wanted the numbers on the title to match up to the HIN but i can't find/see it because it has been painted over apparently. Either way, I sort of like the idea of a newer type console and seating. I just want to utilize all of it's limited space. They sure are proud of those consoles...mahogany or fiberglass :/

If ypu want to find the hull id # I would try sanding carefully in the bow locker. On my 1966 the number was on the vertical wall of the locker towards the stern of the boat about 2" up from the bottom of the well.
The numbers are white so it may be very tough as your interior is white.
Console, I would go after market fiber glass unless you want the traditional look. Motor I would recommend is 70 HP.
Yamaha makes a 4-stroke that is not too heavy, I have never owned one but like my 115 HP 4-stroke. If you are a speed demon, or carry lots of people, a 90HP may be better but I have a 90HP on my 1966 and it is truly scarey fast. My kids run the boats and are adults, but let one person at the throttle that does not get it and it would be less safe than I would want.
The 70 HP on the 1964 is plenty in my opinion.

Rails are as Phil mentioned. I like the side rails toward the middle/stern, but have removed from the 1964. I will not put them back, but have kept on the 1966. The bow rails are in my opinion stupid and if I owned a Whaler with them I would remove at once.

Hull looks great, as said earlier it is a great place to start. Clean platform.

Thanks. good information. I will look for that number in the bow locker again. I want to keep it clean with things tucked away. I'd like to hide the fuel tank and a cooler in the console or under the leaning post or something. I appreciate the ideas...keep em' coming. Pictures are great too. Of all the bazillions of google images i can't seem to find a set up i'd like....can't see the forest for the trees almost. ha.

At this point, we really have no idea what year this is without a Stencil number.
Mid 1964 and before, the stencil number was located in the bow locker. After that, it was in the splashwell.

What is shown in your photos is a "Bare Hull". No model at all because there is no interior.

Assuming mine is a 1968 as the title says, approximately where in the splashwell would the stencil be and if i were to sand it lightly wouldn't it just sand the stenciling away at the same time? I'm just curious what the boat was originally and would like to find out before i make decisions on which way to go with it.

Absolutely can't go by titles. Just the way it was back then and even now for some older models that have lost their titles.

Blue interior hulls had white stencil numbers.
Desert Tan and White hulls had black stencil numbers.

Yours would be white.
Again, you can find many photos in the members personal pages.
You can look at all the 16 models to find a stencil number somewhere. If I find one, I will post it for you.

Boats prior to October 1972 did not have HIN numbers.
They only had Stencil numbers for identification.

The only way to find out what model this boat was when it left the factory is to contact Boston Whaler and give them your stencil number. Unfortunately, you do not have the stencil number at this time.

Try to find a used Montauk console. Would look great on that boat.
