I am in the process of installing a refurbished fuel tank deck lid on a 1974 Outrage 21. I have decided to install some type of rubber gasket to help seal the joint. Looking for suggestions as to material, configuration, etc. I believe 1/8" by one inch wide butyl strip stock may do the trick but not sure. Any input is appreciated.

You can use neoprene. It has good resistance to oil / gas and is rated great against water. There is another type of rubber that is better, but is hard to find. My personal experience says to stay away from cork.

No need for a gasket.

Either tape off or free hand a a thick bead of a high quality polysulfide based caulk . Do not use an adhesive/caulk material.

Thanks for the input. I have purchased 50 durometer 1/8 inch thick, 1" wide neoprene which I will adhere to the underside of the lid. The vent channel will be sealed with silicone and fuel filler hole and fuel exit hole will be filled with float noodle sections and silicone. Wish me luck.
