My first whaler was a 1989 Guardian 17, which is the same hull as the Montauk. I loved the boat and thought I would never sell it. At the time I was just married and had no children, but my wife always hated the rough ride in chop.

We kept the Guardian until my daughter was 4 years old and had lots of fun on the boat in nice conditions, before I was requested to go back due to the "pounding" in rougher water

I then purchased a 1983 Outrage 18 and re-powered it was a 2014 Etec 150. As much as I loved the Guardian 17, the Outrage 18 is so much more boat in all aspects. We can now spend the whole day on the water and everyone is happy with the way the boat handles in all conditions. I would make the move up to an Outrage based on personal experience.

I paid a little over 14,000 for my ETEC 150 fully rigged and water tested with a stainless prop, I Command Guage and I believe the 3+3 Evinrude Warranty. This price also included a SeaStar Hydraulic steering system and fuel tank cleaning and pressure testing.
