Hello guys, I just purchased a 13' 1980 sport and I was wondering if a 15hp 2013 Yamaha 4 stroke engine should be able to move it?
Before purchasing the whaler, I had a 12' inflatable and I purchased the motor brand new from the dealer. Now I don't use the inflatable and I have that engine sitting in my garage. By the way the engine only has 17hours of use.

It's easy enough to throw it on and see what it does.
Assuming it currently doesn't have a motor rigged.
It may not put it on plane with 2 or 3 people on board, but it will move it along.
I think minimum hp to put it on plane may be 25hp.

I agree with the try and see approach. With the right prop I'd bet you will be able to plane but barely and forget about a hole shot. My 13' used to literally fly with a 25 hp 2 stroke and I've seen a couple with 20 hp but I'd pretty much consider that the minimum.

The minimum hp for a 13' was 9.9 hp. Your 13 is a little heavier than the old blue interior hulls but your 15 Honda should plane easily with just you.
It won't cost you anything to try it. I would assume you would have to go down in pitch on your prop because the inflatable was a little lighter. \Let us hear how it goes.

I wouldn't dismiss your 15 so fast. I had a 1969 Sport with a Yamaha 2-stroke 15 on it. It could plane with two adults and two children. It didn't break any speed records, but it did get up and go. Admittedly your 15 is a little heavier, but it's definitely worth a try.

My 1981 Sport 13 has a newish 30 HP Merc EFI four stroke with T/T. With two aboard @300 pounds and six gallons of fuel and CG gear the boat pops onto plane and cruises at about 20 MPH.

I would expect very sluggish performance with half the HP but the reduction in weight on the transom could prove me wrong.
